Warsaw Poland Architecture and streets

The architecture of Warsaw is largely represented by modern urban developments and vast residential areas of the New Town. The major part of the city was razed to the ground during World War II. In 1960s the major part of the city was reconstructed, reviving original architectural styles. Some opinions imply vague credibility of the work, being thoroughly modern, but in fact the reconstructed buildings bear more resemblance to the original ones, because the style was not intervened with later additions.

Now Old Town is a marvelous place, recreating the atmosphere of medieval city. Royal Castle is the magnificent residence of Polish kings. It was destroyed during World War II and reconstructed in 1970s. Its splendid interior evokes the times of Jagellonian dynasty.

King Zygmunt's Column is one of the city's most famous landmarks and oldest secular monuments in northern Europe. It was created in 1644 in honour of King Zygmunt III Waza, who moved the Polish capital from Krakow to Warsaw. The Barbican is a characteristic example of medieval architecture.

The Royal Route, principal tourist street, has many classicist palaces, the Presidential Palace and Warsaw University campus. Presidential palace is an elegant classicist version of building, which occupied this place since 1643 as an aristocratic residence. Since 1994 it is an official presidential residence.

There are many green areas in the city. The Ogrod Saski is located near the Old Town. Historical Powazki Cemetery has many beautiful sculptures, some by the renowned 19th and 20th century artists. Probably the city's most enchanting place is Lazienki Park with crystal lakes and marble sculptures, and baroque Palace on the Water.

The city is also well-known for some impressive and formidable Social Realism buildings, as the Palace of Culture and Science skyscraper, the Stadion Dziesieciolecia and Plac Konstytucji (Constitution Square).
